What is a Digital Building Consultant?
Digital Building Consultants are the technology experts within the traditional development team, delivering future-proofed developments at the start of their journey.
Within every project, numerous stakeholders support the vision for the development, but none of them lead on the co-ordination and delivery of the project's technology aspirations.
This is where the role of a Digital Building Consultant begins.
We work with every stakeholder to define the desired outcomes for technology from both an occupier and operational experience. We then use this information as the foundations of a technology strategy, from build phase through to operation.
Technology focused roles within a project development team
Smart Champion
The client lead with clear aspirations for the development project.
Digital Building Consultant
We put into action the Smart Champion’s technology aspirations. The strategies we create are critical to the MSI and Commissioning Agent’s roles and, in turn, operationally successful technology.
Master System Integrator
MSI’s provide the technical knowledge of siloed systems & data modelling. They ensure the system is set up correctly from the outset and are the glue that binds everything together with sub contractors.
Commission Agent
The Commissioning Agents focus on verifying that the systems are working properly in conjunction with MSI.
Smart Buildings are here to stay
The New RIBA Overlay: Smart Consultants
In January 2024, RIBA announced an update to the Smart Buildings Overlay to the RIBA Plan of Works.
The acknowledgment of Digital Building Consultants from RIBA Stage 0 shows that early consideration of key digital capabilities is essential to delivering successful smart buildings.
The main changes to the recommendations are related to Stages 6 and 7 about the handover and data collection of the technologies in use. Which is aligned to our methodology.
At Trustek, our Building Technology Strategies put as much focus on these areas, ensuring that the emphasis on technology in the build phases is echoed through to operation.
Our methodology
We support the creation of the vision for the development and contextualise this with existing products available in the market place.
Our advice focuses on the operational impact once the development has completed. This is in both OPEX costs and experience for occupiers.
Creation of onboard documentation ensures that companies are aware of the technology within the building.
