ESG Software Platform
ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) platforms are essential for businesses aiming to improve their sustainability practices, ensure regulatory compliance and enhance their reputation among stakeholders.Data Collection and Management: ESG software platforms collect and organise huge volumes of data from the total carbon footprint, gas, water, electric and waste, through to social impact studies from each asset. With both global and local legislations, the value of ESG Software platforms are to automate both the data collection and the reporting element for those larger landlords who manage global portfolios.
Environmental Legislation Climate Change Act 2008: This is the cornerstone of the UK's climate policy, setting legally binding targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050
UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS): Introduced in 2021, replacing the EU ETS, this cap-and-trade system regulates emissions from energy-intensive industries
The Environment Act 2021: Focuses on improving air quality, waste reduction, water management and biodiversity. It includes provisions for setting legally binding environmental targets
Energy Efficiency Regulations 2015: Known as Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES), this legislation requires properties to meet specific energy efficiency ratings before they can be leased
ESG platforms not only allow for accurate reporting from both real time and manual data entry, they are increasingly becoming part of the NetZero pathway for buildings.
Key Deadlines for Net-Zero Buildings:
2050: All buildings in the UK (residential, commercial, and industrial) must be net zero in line with the overall national target. This aligns with the UK's commitment to the Paris Agreement and achieving a balance between emissions and removals.
2030 (Public Sector Buildings): Under the UK government's Clean Growth Strategy, public sector buildings are targeted to be at least 50% more efficient by 2030. The Greening Government Commitments require the public sector to demonstrate leadership in achieving net zero by eliminating direct emissions and improving energy efficiency.
2025 (New Buildings): The Future Homes Standard and Future Buildings Standard (expected to take effect in 2025) will require all new buildings to be built to net-zero-ready standards. New homes must produce 75-80% lower CO2 emissions compared to current standards. Non-domestic buildings must meet similarly ambitious targets, incorporating low-carbon heating systems and high energy efficiency.
2023 Onward (Energy Performance Standards for Existing Buildings) / Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES): From April 2023, commercial buildings must have an EPC rating of E or higher to be rented. By 2030, it is anticipated that this requirement will tighten to B or higher.
Reporting and Compliance: ESG platforms generate detailed reports to help organisations comply with various regulatory requirements and sustainability standards
Performance Monitoring: They provide real-time monitoring and analytics to track the organisation's performance against ESG metrics
Stakeholder Communication: ESG software enhances transparency by providing stakeholders with clear and accurate information about the organisation's ESG initiatives
Risk Management: By identifying potential risks related to environmental, social, and governance factors, these platforms help organisations mitigate and manage those risks
